Feversham Primary Academy Music

Feversham Primary Academy is recognised across the world as a leader in Primary Music Education. Recent years have seen music lead Jimmy Rotheram invited to share his work in Dubai, Norway, The US, Sweden and Portugal. In 2018 he was nominated for the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize and sits on advisory boards of the Department for Education, ABRSM, Oak National, The Benedetti Foundation and Music Teacher Magazine. As well as his work at Feversham, Jimmy is keen to support any and all schools and organisations in implementing high quality music lessons in a primary setting. He has written the Primary Music course for the Benedetti Foundation, as well as being a co-author of the Cambridge International Schools music curriculum and several of ABRSM’s Classroom 200 resources.

Feversham’s music programme has been lauded in the House of Lords and the House of Commons, by people as powerful and diverse as Sir Ken Robinson and schools’ minister Nick Gibb. We sit in the middle of the traditional/progressive spectrum, drawing on traditional methodology such as Kodály, Dalcroze and Orff, as well as more modern approaches such as Lucy Green’s child led initiatives (see curriculum),

We believe that all children, and all schools, not only could be musical, but should be. It is not enough to do music for one term only, or fortnightly on a carousel. Classroom teachers need help in delivering and assessing music, but they are the ones who can work with children every day to develop their musicianship. Music cannot be left to one lonely individual in a school who only sees each class once a week. It cannot be completely outsourced and left to others. We would not expect children to make much progress in any subject taught this way, and music is no different. Our model works on specialist input, but this is delivered in part by an empowered, trained and enthusiastic staff. 5 members of staff have completed a level 1 certificate in Kodály musicianship and methodology (see training opportunities)
